Not a type

You are not a personality type

A type is a habit of attention. How you care is a practice. Neither is a cage. You are not four letters and a sign. You are someone practicing care, meeting a shadow, writing a letter.

Two masks can rhyme. Tuesday still arrives. Type is not fate. The letter is how we find out who is home.

  1. I. Persona

The mask that gets you in the room

Jung: the persona is the system of relations between inner life and the world, a mask that fits. Dating apps live almost entirely here. The bio, the three photos, the adjectives. Useful. Necessary. Fatal if it is the whole person. The chambers exist so the mask can sit down and the one who wears it can speak.

  2. II. Shadow

What the mask will not carry

Jung: one does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious. The ordinary dating fear belongs here: What if I am not your type? Chamber VI is the apprentice-piece. If you need the beloved to hold what you will not name, you will call it chemistry and it will be hunger. A 96 cannot do this work.

  3. III. The inner other

    Syzygy inside one body

Jung called this anima and animus. This house will not assign them by sex. Anyone may hold the inner beloved. Anyone may hold the inner will. Inner marriage first: the part that feels and the part that moves, the part that watches and the part that eats. If you hire a stranger to be the caring you refuse, the outer pairing is a rescue, not a meeting.

  4. IV. Self

The whole that types cannot hold

The Self is not a personality type. It is the circle that contains persona, shadow, and the inner other. Delphi: know thyself. Jung: who looks inside, awakes. Know thyself is not know thy sun sign, or thy four letters. It is to notice the player inside the play. Agency lives here. The letter is how the Self becomes audible.

To know with.
Latin conscire · con, with · scire, to know

A looking

Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.

C. G. Jung

A type can describe a habit of attention. Consciousness is the one who notices the habit, and can know with someone else.

Love is the only way to grasp another human being in the innermost core of his personality.

Viktor E. Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1959

The salvation of man is through love and in love.

Viktor E. Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1959

Maps, not cages

  • Jung’s types

1921, Psychological Types. Extraversion and introversion. Thinking, feeling, sensation, intuition. Attitudes of consciousness, not myths. Useful as weather of how a mind meets ordinary life. Myers and Briggs later made sixteen boxes. A box can be a mirror. It cannot be a beloved.

  • Traits

The Big Five and its cousins measure habits: how open, how steady, how kind. Science of description. Not a story. We do not quiz you into five numbers. A letter will show the same weather, slower, and you cannot game it with the right adjectives.

  • Twelve hero brands

Pearson and the marketers: Innocent, Warrior, Lover, Magician, Sage, Jester, and the rest. Kin to our count, not our map. Those twelve are plot functions. Ours are ways of caring taken from the sky: Ignition, Keeper, Alchemist, Horizon. You may visit a brand archetype in a story. You practice care in a life.

  • Twelve ways of caring

The signs as we use them. Not twelve personalities to pick. A public question once asked if there were only twelve. Take it as a vocabulary of care. You are practicing one right now. How you live it is still yours.

You do not date a type. You date a person still becoming.

Know yourself. Then write. The letter is how we find out who is home.
